Klarman: The Forgotten Lessons of 2008
In this excerpt from his annual letter, investing great Seth Klarman describes 20 lessons from the financial crisis which, he says, “were either never learned or else were immediately forgotten by most market participants.”

One might have expected that the near-death experience of most investors in 2008 would generate valuable lessons for the future. We all know about the “depression mentality” of our parents and grandparents who lived through the...

On Sept. 11th 2009, the Danish newspaper Weekendavisen brought an article with the title "I sacrifice in a conviction". The article pictured this ambitious guy, working in investment banking in London. He is working long hours, meaning approx 100 hours a week. His opinion is that:
"I sacrifice in the conviction, that the grass is greener on the other side. That when I choose to stop in investment banking, I will be at the highest level possible. It is a question of how much you live in the...

Hi Guys,
Right now I am sitting in Orlando, Florida. The sun is shining and the grass is green. I have spent a week in Florida together with my entrepreneurial uncle. It has been simply great. We have had a lot of interesting discussions about new possible business ventures, the financial situation and human beings in generel. Well, I have some time now and I want to share some observations I did on this trip - about my uncle and about the US.
1) Be open
My uncle is a true idea creator...

Hi guys,
I was just sitting here in Singapore and doing my Marketing Information Systems preparation for tomorrow. I have midterm. But then out of the blue I started to think about key success factors as they look in my world. Maybe the MIS course is not that interesting after all. Do you agree with me? Please right in the Guestbook what you think is important:

1. Be you
If you're acting as somebody else, people will look right through you. Their confidence in you will decrease. You...

Hello Everybody
I hope you all are doing well. As some of you might now I am in Singapore on Singapore Management University (SMU). I arrived here the 31th of August and I am staying here for 5 months.
First of all let me say that you are not going to get any pictures now (maybe only a small one). You have to wait - as a child for Christmas I am sure. However what I will write about is the culture in Singapore and the teaching and facilities here at SMU. And then a general update of what I am...

Hej allesammen
